kultivermedier

Kultivermedier is a term found in some Nordic languages to denote the substances and formulations used to culture microorganisms in laboratory settings. In scientific literature, the standard term is kulturmedier (culture media). When kultivermedier is used, it typically refers to the same concept: a growth-supporting medium prepared to foster microbial growth in vitro.

Media can be liquid or solid. Liquid media, or broths, provide a nutrient-rich environment in which microbes grow suspended. Solid media, usually based on agar, allow growth as visible colonies. Media are further classified as defined (synthetic) or complex (containing natural extracts such as yeast or beef extracts); selective media favor the growth of particular organisms, differential media reveal differences between species, and enrichment media enhance the growth of specific microbes from mixed samples.

Common examples include nutrient broth, tryptic soy broth, nutrient agar, and MacConkey agar. Typical components are a carbon source (like glucose), nitrogen sources (peptides, amino acids), minerals and trace elements, vitamins and growth factors, and a pH buffer. Some media include indicators, antibiotics, or dyes to support selection or differentiation.

Media are essential in clinical microbiology, environmental microbiology, and industrial biotechnology. They enable isolation, identification, and study of microorganisms, and support fermentation processes. Handling requires aseptic technique and appropriate biosafety practices to prevent contamination and exposure.
