The classical framework for describing transport phenomena is built upon three fundamental laws. Firstly, momentum transport is governed by the Navier–Stokes equations, which arise from the conservation of momentum and incorporate viscosity as a key parameter. Secondly, energy transport is described by the heat conduction equation, an expression of Fourier’s law. In engineering applications, the coupling of these transport processes is often important. Heat exchangers, for instance, rely on simultaneous momentum and energy transport to achieve temperature change. Gas separation membranes involve simultaneous mass transport (diffusion) and sometimes convective momentum transfer. In porous media, the movement of fluids, heat, and solutes can be strongly coupled, giving rise to complex behavior such as thermal dispersion.

Analytical solutions exist for simple geometries and boundary conditions, but real-world systems typically require numerical simulation. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and multiphysics solvers use discretized forms of the governing equations to predict transport behavior in complex geometries. Experimental techniques, such as tracer studies and particle image velocimetry, are employed to validate models and provide insight into transport mechanisms.

Accurate prediction of pollutant dispersion, efficient heat and mass transfer in renewable energy devices, and improved control of chemical reactors all hinge on a deep grasp of transport phenomena.
