Kujutistöötlus, known in English as image processing, is a method of performing some operations on an image, in order to get an enhanced image or to extract some information from it. It is a type of signal processing for which the input is an image, like a photograph or video frame; the output of image processing may be either an image or a set of characteristics or parameters related to the image. Image processing is divided into analog image processing and digital image processing. Since digital image processing is the most common and useful type of image processing, it is usually just called "image processing".

Digital image processing uses algorithms to perform image processing on digital images. A digital image is an image of an object that has been digitized, meaning that it has been converted into a digital file, consisting of a finite set of data points called pixels, each of which has a finite number of bits assigned to represent its discrete values.

The applications of image processing are vast and include enhancing images for better viewing, filtering out noise, object detection and recognition, image compression for efficient storage and transmission, and medical imaging analysis. In medical imaging, it's used to detect diseases, analyze scans, and guide surgical procedures. In astronomy, it helps to enhance faint celestial objects and analyze astronomical data. In remote sensing, it is used to analyze satellite imagery for environmental monitoring and resource management. Image processing also plays a crucial role in computer vision, enabling machines to "see" and interpret visual information.
