Kudosreaktiot, often referred to as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), are a serious complication that can occur after a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT). This condition arises when the donor's immune cells, present in the transplanted stem cells, recognize the recipient's body (the host) as foreign and initiate an immune response against it. Essentially, the "graft" (the transplanted cells) attacks the "host" (the recipient).

The severity of kudosreaktiot can range from mild to life-threatening. Symptoms vary depending on which organs are affected and can include skin rashes, jaundice due to liver involvement, diarrhea from intestinal damage, and bone marrow suppression. The immune system of the recipient, which is typically weakened by the conditioning regimen before transplantation, is unable to effectively suppress the donor's immune cells.

There are two main forms of kudosreaktiot: acute and chronic. Acute kudosreaktiot usually appear within the first 100 days post-transplant and primarily affect the skin, liver, and gastrointestinal tract. Chronic kudosreaktiot can develop later, sometimes months or years after the transplant, and can affect a wider range of organs, leading to symptoms resembling autoimmune diseases.

Preventing and managing kudosreaktiot is a critical aspect of HSCT care. Strategies include using less immunologically mismatched donors, administering immunosuppressive medications to the recipient, and employing strategies to deplete T-cells from the donor graft. Treatment for active kudosreaktiot typically involves further immunosuppression to dampen the donor immune response.
