kuchenka

Kuchenka is the Polish term for a cooking appliance used to prepare food. It can refer to a freestanding stove, a range, or a built-in cooktop with or without an oven. In Polish kitchens the kuchenka is the central appliance that provides heat for cooking, and is often used together with a separate oven (piekarnik).

There are several variants by fuel and design. A kuchenka gazowa uses gas burners; a kuchenka elektryczna

Historically, kuchenki burned wood or coal, with gas and electric models becoming standard in the 20th century.

Etymology and terminology: The word kuchenka derives from kuchnia (kitchen) with the common device-forming suffix -ka.
