Kristályhibák, also known as crystal defects, are irregularities in the perfect, repeating arrangement of atoms, ions, or molecules within a crystal lattice. These imperfections can significantly influence a material's physical and chemical properties. Crystal defects can be broadly categorized into point defects, line defects, and surface defects.

Point defects involve localized disruptions at a single lattice point. Examples include vacancies, where an atom is missing from its regular site, and interstitials, where an extra atom is located in a position not normally occupied by one. Substitutional defects occur when an atom of a different element replaces a host atom in the lattice. These point defects can affect electrical conductivity, diffusion rates, and mechanical strength.

Line defects, or dislocations, are one-dimensional imperfections that extend through the crystal. Edge dislocations involve an extra half-plane of atoms inserted into the lattice, while screw dislocations are characterized by a helical arrangement of atomic planes. Dislocations are crucial for understanding plastic deformation in metals, as they allow for slip and movement within the crystal structure.

Surface defects exist at the boundaries of the crystal, such as grain boundaries where different crystal orientations meet, and external surfaces themselves. These defects can act as sites for chemical reactions and influence properties like corrosion resistance and catalytic activity. The presence and type of crystal defects are critical considerations in materials science and engineering for tailoring material performance.
