Kransslagader is the Dutch term for coronary artery. These are the blood vessels that supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle itself. The heart, like any other organ, requires a continuous supply of oxygen and nutrients to function properly. The coronary arteries are responsible for delivering this vital supply.

There are two main coronary arteries, the left and the right coronary artery, which branch off from the aorta, the main artery carrying blood from the heart to the rest of the body. The left coronary artery further divides into the left anterior descending artery and the left circumflex artery. These arteries form a network that spreads across the surface of the heart, ensuring that all parts of the heart muscle receive adequate blood flow.

Diseases affecting the coronary arteries, collectively known as coronary artery disease, are a major health concern. The most common condition is atherosclerosis, where fatty deposits, or plaque, build up inside the arteries, narrowing them and restricting blood flow. This can lead to chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, and in severe cases, a heart attack (myocardial infarction), when blood flow to a part of the heart muscle is completely blocked. Factors that increase the risk of coronary artery disease include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle. Medical interventions for coronary artery disease range from lifestyle changes and medications to procedures like angioplasty and coronary artery bypass surgery.
