Kranienerver, also known as cranial nerves, are a set of twelve paired nerves that emerge directly from the brain rather than the spinal cord. They are crucial for transmitting sensory information from the head and neck to the brain and for controlling motor functions in these areas. Each cranial nerve has a Roman numeral designation from I to XII, indicating their order of origin from the brain, from front to back.

These nerves are responsible for a wide range of functions. For example, the olfactory nerve (I) is responsible for smell, the optic nerve (II) for vision, and the oculomotor nerve (III) controls most eye movements. The trigeminal nerve (V) is vital for facial sensation and chewing, while the facial nerve (VII) governs facial expressions and taste. The vestibulocochlear nerve (VIII) is essential for hearing and balance. Other cranial nerves control functions such as swallowing, heart rate, digestion, and movement of the tongue and shoulders.
