kraftsiden
Kraftsiden is a term that refers to the side of a piece of lumber that exhibits the most attractive wood grain or visual characteristics. This is often the side that is most prominently displayed in finished projects such as furniture, cabinetry, or decorative trim. When selecting lumber for a project where aesthetics are important, woodworkers will often orient the boards so that the kraftsiden is facing outwards or upwards. Identifying the kraftsiden can involve looking for flowing, clear grain patterns, distinct figuring, or a desirable color. Conversely, the opposite side of the board is sometimes referred to as the "utility side" or "back side" and may have more imperfections or less appealing grain. The term is primarily used in woodworking and lumber grading contexts.
