The term "kosmonavt" (космонавт) is the Russian word for "cosmonaut," a term used for astronauts who have traveled into space. The term is derived from the Greek words "kosmos" (cosmos, universe) and "nautes" (sailor). This contrasts with the Western term "astronaut," which comes from Greek "astron" (star) and "nautes."

The Soviet Union launched the first human into space, Yuri Gagarin, on April 12, 1961. Gagarin's historic flight aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft marked the beginning of human space exploration.
