Kosketusjännitteiden, or touch voltages, refer to the electrical potential difference that can exist between two points that a person might touch simultaneously. This is a critical concept in electrical safety, particularly in situations where electrical faults or malfunctions can occur. When an electrical current flows through the ground or a conductive structure, it creates a potential gradient. If a person touches two points with different electrical potentials, a current will flow through their body, which is the touch voltage.

The magnitude of a touch voltage depends on several factors, including the magnitude of the fault current, the resistance of the earth, the distance between the points being touched, and the resistivity of the surface the person is standing on. Higher fault currents and higher ground resistance generally lead to higher touch voltages. Conversely, lower ground resistance and being in direct contact with low-resistance surfaces can help dissipate the voltage and reduce the risk.

Touch voltages are a primary concern in preventing electric shock. Safety measures like grounding, equipotential bonding, and protective devices such as residual-current devices (RCDs) or ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) are designed to limit or quickly interrupt the flow of current, thereby reducing the duration and magnitude of touch voltages. Understanding and mitigating touch voltages is essential for ensuring the safety of individuals in environments where electrical systems are present, from residential homes to industrial facilities.
