Coronavirusfamilier refers to the family of viruses known as Coronaviridae. This family encompasses a large group of RNA viruses that are known to cause illness in humans and animals. The name "coronavirus" originates from the Latin word "corona," meaning crown, due to the characteristic crown-like spikes that appear on the surface of these viruses under a microscope.

Coronaviridae are divided into four main genera: Alphacoronavirus, Betacoronavirus, Gammacoronavirus, and Deltacoronavirus. Alphacoronaviruses and Betacoronaviruses are primarily found in bats, while Gammacoronaviruses and Deltacoronaviruses infect birds. Some coronaviruses can transmit from animals to humans, a process known as zoonotic transmission.

In humans, coronaviruses can cause a range of respiratory illnesses, from the common cold to more severe diseases. Common human coronaviruses include 229E, NL63, OC43, and HKU1, which typically cause mild to moderate upper-respiratory tract illnesses. However, three notable coronaviruses have emerged in recent decades that have caused significant outbreaks of severe respiratory disease: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV), Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), and the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic. Research into coronaviruses continues to focus on understanding their transmission, pathogenesis, and developing effective countermeasures.
