Koronaarikuvaus, also known as coronary angiography, is a medical imaging technique used to visualize the coronary arteries, the blood vessels that supply the heart muscle. This procedure involves inserting a thin, flexible tube called a catheter into an artery, typically in the arm or groin. The catheter is then guided through the circulatory system to the coronary arteries.

Once the catheter is in place, a contrast dye is injected into the coronary arteries. This dye, which is visible on X-ray images, highlights the blood flow and any blockages or narrowing within the arteries. A special X-ray machine, called a fluoroscope, captures a series of images, creating a real-time video of the blood flow. This allows cardiologists to identify areas of atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, as well as other potential problems like aneurysms or congenital abnormalities.

Koronaarikuvaus is a diagnostic tool that plays a crucial role in identifying and assessing the severity of coronary artery disease. The information obtained from the procedure helps physicians determine the best course of treatment, which may include medication, angioplasty with stenting, or coronary artery bypass surgery.
