koroidinen

Koroidinen is an adjective used in medical terminology to describe structures, processes, or conditions that pertain to the choroid, the vascular layer of the eye located between the sclera and the retina. In English-language ophthalmology, the corresponding term is choroidal.

Anatomically, the choroid comprises several components. The suprachoroidal space lies adjacent to the sclera, followed by the choroidal stroma, which contains blood vessels and melanocytes, and the choriocapillaris, a dense network of capillaries that supplies the outer retina. The inner boundary of the choroid is Bruch's membrane, which separates the choroid from the retinal pigment epithelium. The choroid plays a crucial role in nourishing the outer retinal layers and in absorbing excess light to reduce scatter.

Functionally, the choroid provides oxygen and nutrients to the outer retina, contributes to thermal regulation, and participates in immune defense of the eye. Its rich vascularity makes it a site of various pathologies, particularly those involving neovascular changes.

Clinical relevance includes conditions with choroidal involvement, such as choroidal neovascularization, central serous chorioretinopathy, and inflammatory choroiditis. Diagnostic approaches commonly involve optical coherence tomography (OCT), fluorescein angiography, and indocyanine green angiography, sometimes complemented by ultrasonography.

Etymology notes that koroidinen follows the Finnish linguistic convention for adjectives derived from koroidi (choroid). Because the English term choroidal is standard in international usage, koroidinen appears mainly in Finnish-language sources or multilingual texts.
