Koostetyyppeihin refers to different types of composite materials. Composites are materials made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties. When combined, they produce a material with characteristics different from the individual components. The individual components remain distinct and identifiable within the finished structure.

There are several ways to categorize composite materials. One common method is by the type of matrix material used. The matrix is the binder or the continuous phase that surrounds and binds the reinforcement. Common matrix types include polymer matrices, metal matrices, and ceramic matrices. Polymer matrix composites (PMCs) are widely used due to their low cost, ease of processing, and good mechanical properties. Metal matrix composites (MMCs) offer higher strength and stiffness than unreinforced metals, along with improved wear resistance and high-temperature performance. Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are known for their exceptional high-temperature strength, stiffness, and chemical inertness, making them suitable for extreme environments.

Another classification is based on the type of reinforcement material. Reinforcements are typically stronger and stiffer than the matrix and are added to improve the composite's mechanical properties. Common reinforcements include fibers, particles, and structural reinforcements. Fiber-reinforced composites, such as carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) and glass fiber reinforced polymers (GFRP), are very common. Particle-reinforced composites use small particles dispersed within the matrix. Structural composites, like laminates or sandwich panels, are designed with specific structural arrangements to achieve optimized performance. The choice of matrix and reinforcement, as well as their arrangement, determines the final properties and applications of the composite material.
