In a two-dimensional Cartesian coordinate system, commonly used on a plane, two axes are employed, usually labeled x and y. A point on this plane is then represented by an ordered pair (x, y), where x indicates the distance along the x-axis and y indicates the distance along the y-axis from the origin. Similarly, a three-dimensional Cartesian system uses three perpendicular axes (x, y, and z) to define locations with an ordered triplet (x, y, z).

Other types of coordinate systems exist, such as polar coordinates, which use a distance from the origin and an angle to define a point, or spherical coordinates, which utilize radial distance, polar angle, and azimuthal angle. The choice of coordinate system depends on the nature of the problem or the geometry of the space being described.
