Konvoluutioperä, often translated as "convolutional tail" or "convolutional remainder," is a concept that can arise in the context of signal processing and time series analysis, particularly when dealing with the output of a linear time-invariant (LTI) system. When an LTI system is analyzed or simulated, its output is typically represented as the convolution of the input signal with the system's impulse response. If the analysis or simulation is performed over a finite duration, the convolution operation might not be perfectly captured.

The "convolutional tail" refers to the part of the system's response that extends beyond the observed or computed output. This can happen for several reasons. If a system has a long impulse response, and the input signal is short, the output may appear to "ring" or continue for a period after the input has ceased. Similarly, in scenarios involving discrete-time signals and finite-length computations, the true, theoretically infinite convolution might be truncated. The convolutional tail represents the portion of the convolution that would have occurred if the computation or observation window were extended.

Understanding and accounting for the convolutional tail is important in applications where accurate representation of system behavior is critical. For instance, in audio processing, a long reverberation effect can be seen as a convolutional tail. In control systems, the transient response of a system might exhibit such characteristics. Techniques for dealing with convolutional tails include zero-padding to effectively extend the computation, or specific methods to estimate or model the tail based on system properties.
