Kontrollsüsteemist refers to a control system in Estonian. A control system is a mechanism that manages, commands, directs, or regulates the behavior of other devices or systems. Its primary goal is to maintain a desired output or state by manipulating input variables. Control systems are ubiquitous, found in everything from simple household appliances like thermostats to complex industrial processes and sophisticated aerospace applications.

There are broadly two categories of control systems: open-loop and closed-loop. In an open-loop system, the control action is independent of the system's output. For example, a simple timer on a toaster operates on an open-loop principle; it doesn't check how toasted the bread is. A closed-loop system, also known as a feedback control system, uses the system's output to influence the control action. A thermostat is a good example of a closed-loop system. It measures the room temperature (the output) and adjusts the heating or cooling (the control action) accordingly to maintain a set point.

The design of control systems involves understanding the system being controlled (the plant) and developing algorithms or controllers that achieve the desired performance. Performance metrics often include stability, accuracy, speed of response, and robustness to disturbances. Control theory is the specialized field of engineering and mathematics that deals with the analysis and design of control systems. Modern control systems often incorporate sophisticated digital controllers, sensors, and actuators to achieve highly precise and efficient operation.
