Kontrollsummaga is a data integrity concept used to verify the integrity of large data sets by aggregating individual per-block checksums into a single master value. The term combines kontrollsum (control sum) with a ga suffix that denotes a method or system, drawing on Nordic linguistic roots, though its usage is theoretical and cross-disciplinary rather than tied to a specific standard.

In practice, a data set is divided into blocks; each block is assigned a checksum using a conventional method such as a CRC or cryptographic hash. These per-block checksums are then combined with a secondary function to produce the kontrollsummaga. The function is typically either order-sensitive or order-independent depending on design; common choices include XOR, modular addition, or a cryptographic combiner. The resulting value serves as a single reference for the entire data set, and recomputing it at validation time can detect corruption and, in some designs, minor tampering.

Kontrollsummaga is used in contexts where validating many small blocks would be impractical, such as archival storage, distributed file systems, and data migrations. It offers a compact integrity signature and facilitates quick sanity checks, but it is not a replacement for per-block checksums or cryptographic authentication. Collisions or deliberate tampering may go undetected if the aggregation function is weak, and the system requires consistent block ordering and accompanying metadata to interpret the master value correctly.
