Kontrollstavar, often translated as control rods, are essential components in nuclear reactors. Their primary function is to absorb neutrons, thereby controlling the rate of the nuclear fission chain reaction. They are typically made of materials with a high neutron absorption cross-section, such as cadmium, boron, or hafnium.

In a nuclear reactor, the fission of atomic nuclei releases neutrons, which in turn cause further fissions, sustaining a chain reaction. Control rods are inserted into or withdrawn from the reactor core to regulate the number of neutrons available to cause fission. When control rods are inserted further into the core, they absorb more neutrons, slowing down the reaction. Conversely, withdrawing them allows more neutrons to participate in fission, increasing the reaction rate. This precise control is crucial for maintaining the reactor at a stable power level or for safely shutting it down.

The ability to finely adjust the position of control rods allows operators to manage the reactor's power output for electricity generation or other purposes. In emergency situations, control rods can be rapidly inserted into the core, a process known as a scram or shutdown, to quickly halt the chain reaction and prevent overheating or other hazardous conditions. The design and operation of control rod systems are critical aspects of nuclear reactor safety and efficiency.
