A kontrollisysteemi, often translated as control system, is a system that manages, commands, directs, or regulates the behavior of other systems or devices. It is a fundamental concept in engineering, automation, and many other scientific fields. The primary goal of a control system is to achieve a desired output or behavior from a system by manipulating its inputs. This manipulation is based on feedback from the system itself or on a predetermined set of instructions.

Control systems can be broadly categorized into two main types: open-loop and closed-loop. In an open-loop control system, the control action is independent of the output. For example, a simple timer in a washing machine is an open-loop system; it runs for a set duration regardless of how clean the clothes actually are. In contrast, a closed-loop control system, also known as a feedback control system, uses the output of the system to adjust the control action. A thermostat regulating room temperature is a classic example of a closed-loop system. It measures the current temperature and adjusts the heating or cooling to reach and maintain the desired setpoint.

The components of a control system typically include sensors to measure the system's output, controllers that process the measured data and decide on the control action, and actuators that implement the control action by affecting the system's input. Control systems are essential for maintaining stability, optimizing performance, and ensuring safety in a vast array of applications, from industrial automation and robotics to aerospace and biomedical devices.
