Kontrasztérzékelés is a perceptual phenomenon where the apparent brightness or darkness of an object is influenced by the surrounding visual elements. In simpler terms, it's how our eyes and brain interpret the difference between light and dark areas in our field of vision. This is not an inherent property of the object itself, but rather a result of how our visual system processes information.

Several factors contribute to kontrasztérzékelés. The most significant is the immediate visual context. A gray square will appear lighter when placed on a black background and darker when placed on a white background, even though the gray square's actual luminance remains the same. This phenomenon highlights the adaptive nature of our visual system, which tries to enhance edges and details by exaggerating differences.

Another aspect is simultaneous contrast, where the perception of one color or shade affects the perception of another adjacent to it. This can lead to optical illusions where colors appear to shift or change intensity based on their neighbors. Lateral inhibition, a neural process in the retina, is believed to play a crucial role in generating these effects. Neurons that are strongly stimulated tend to inhibit the activity of neighboring neurons, thereby sharpening contrast.
