Smokers might also drink more coffee, and smoking is independently linked to heart disease. Without accounting for smoking, the study might wrongly attribute the increased risk of heart disease to coffee. Researchers employ various methods to control for confounding, such as randomization in clinical trials, matching participants based on potential confounders, or using statistical techniques like stratification or regression analysis in observational studies.
