In simpler terms, a confounder is a "hidden" factor that influences both the cause being studied and the effect being measured. For instance, if a study investigates the link between coffee consumption and heart disease, age could be a confounder. Older individuals are more likely to drink coffee and also have a higher risk of heart disease, regardless of their coffee intake. Without accounting for age, the study might incorrectly conclude that coffee causes heart disease.

Researchers employ various methods to address confounding. In experimental studies, randomization is a key technique that aims to distribute potential confounders evenly across treatment groups, minimizing their influence. In observational studies, where randomization is not possible, statistical techniques such as matching, stratification, or regression analysis are used to control for the effects of known confounders. Identifying and properly managing confounders is essential for establishing the validity of research findings and drawing accurate causal inferences.
