A koncesion, often translated as concession, is a grant from a government or public authority to a private party of the right to operate a business or service that is typically the domain of the public sector. This can include a wide range of activities such as public transportation, utilities like water or electricity, telecommunications, or the operation of public facilities like airports or toll roads.

The core concept involves transferring the responsibility and often the capital investment for providing a public service from the government to a private entity. In return for undertaking these responsibilities, the concessionaire is granted exclusive or preferential rights for a specified period. This period allows the private operator to recoup their investment and generate profit through fees, fares, or other charges to users.

The terms of a concession agreement are usually detailed and outline the scope of the service, quality standards, pricing, duration, and performance obligations of the concessionaire. They also specify the rights and responsibilities of the granting authority, which often includes oversight and regulation of the service. Concessions are frequently employed to leverage private sector efficiency, expertise, and capital for the benefit of the public. They can also be used to manage and exploit natural resources, such as mining or timber extraction, granting private companies the right to extract these resources in exchange for royalties or other payments to the state.
