A kompostori is the Finnish term for a composting container or system used to transform organic waste into compost through aerobic decomposition. They are common in households, community gardens, and farmyards as a way to reduce waste and recycle nutrients back to the soil.

They come in various forms, including static bins, tumblers (drum units), and open piles. Materials range from plastic and wood to metal. Typical domestic sizes run from roughly 100 to 400 liters, while larger units are used in farms or community gardens.

The process requires a balance of carbon-rich materials (browns such as leaves, straw, paper) and nitrogen-rich materials (greens such as kitchen scraps, grass clippings). Aeration and moisture are critical; turning or aeration promotes decomposition, while moisture should feel like a wrung-out sponge.

To use a kompostori, collect suitable kitchen and garden waste, avoid meat, dairy and oils, and layer browns with greens. Place the unit in a shaded, well-drained area. Regular turning and monitoring of moisture (about 40–60%) help speed the process and reduce odors.

Benefits include reduced household waste, production of nutrient-rich compost for soil improvement, and lowered greenhouse gas potential compared with landfill disposal. Potential drawbacks are odors, pests, and slow decomposition if materials are unsuitable or the system is poorly managed.
