For example, "alive" and "dead" are complementary terms: something is either alive or dead, and there is no middle ground. Another example is "present" and "absent."

In mathematics, complementary sets are sets that, when combined, form a universal set. If U is a universal set and A is a subset of U, then the complement of A, denoted as A' or A^c, is the set of all elements in U that are not in A. The union of A and A' is the universal set U, and their intersection is the empty set.

In psychology, complementary relationships can describe how individuals interact with each other. For instance, one person's needs might be met by another person's offerings, creating a reciprocal balance. This can be seen in friendships, romantic partnerships, or even in family dynamics where different roles complement each other for the functioning of the unit.
