Komplementarität is a fundamental concept that describes the relationship between two or more entities where they complete or enhance each other, creating a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. This idea can be observed across various fields of study and in everyday life.

In physics, complementarity, most famously articulated by Niels Bohr in the context of quantum mechanics, suggests that certain properties of a quantum system cannot be simultaneously observed or measured with arbitrary precision. For instance, a particle can exhibit wave-like or particle-like behavior, but not both at the same time. The experimental setup determines which aspect is revealed, implying that these are complementary descriptions of the same reality.

Beyond physics, the concept extends to complementary colors in art and design, where colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel, when combined, produce a neutral gray or black and appear more vibrant when placed next to each other. In biology, complementary base pairing in DNA (adenine with thymine, and guanine with cytosine) is essential for genetic information storage and replication, where each strand provides the necessary information to construct the other.
