A colonnade is a row of columns supporting a roof or forming a covered walkway. It can enclose a passage along a building, terrace, garden, or square, creating a sheltered promenade or arcade. Colonnades may be freestanding or attached to a structure, and they create rhythm and framing in a façade or interior.

Etymology: The term derives from the French colonnade, from Italian colonna or Latin columna, reflecting its function of bearing a row of columns.

Construction and design: Columns may be of different orders (Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, or regional variants such as Tuscan). The spacing between columns is intercolumniation; the upper elements—architrave, frieze, and pediment—form the entablature. A colonnade may be a simple row or include arches to create an arcade.

Types and uses: In antiquity, stoas and peristyles used colonnades to shelter walkways and define courts. In Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical architecture, colonnades unified elevations and provided processional routes. Notable examples include ancient Greek stoas, Roman peristyles, and Bernini's colonnade around St. Peter's Square.

Significance: Colonnades contribute to structural logic, climate control, acoustics, and the aesthetic of order and rhythm in public spaces. The concept remains widely used for both historical and contemporary architecture.
