Koltvísýringi, also known as carbon monoxide, is a colorless, odorless, and highly toxic gas with the chemical formula CO. It is a simple molecule consisting of one carbon atom and one oxygen atom joined by a triple bond. This triple bond makes it a relatively stable molecule, but also very reactive under certain conditions.

Koltvísýringi is produced by the incomplete combustion of carbon-containing materials. This occurs when there is a lack of sufficient oxygen for complete combustion, which would produce carbon dioxide (CO2). Common sources of koltvísýringi include internal combustion engines, malfunctioning furnaces and stoves, fires, and the burning of tobacco.

The primary danger of koltvísýringi lies in its ability to bind to hemoglobin in the blood. Hemoglobin is responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues. Koltvísýringi binds to hemoglobin with a much higher affinity than oxygen, forming carboxyhemoglobin. This reduces the blood's capacity to carry oxygen, leading to oxygen deprivation in vital organs like the brain and heart. Symptoms of koltvísýringi poisoning can range from mild headaches and dizziness to unconsciousness, coma, and death, depending on the concentration and duration of exposure. Due to its odorless and colorless nature, it can be difficult to detect without specialized equipment, hence its nickname "the silent killer."
