Kolonister are individuals who move from their homeland to settle in a foreign territory with the intention of permanent residence and the establishment of a new community. The term is used in Swedish and related languages to denote settlers who arrive under the auspices of a colonial power, a trading company, or organized migration during periods of expansion from the 15th through the 20th centuries.

Historically, colonists established new towns, farms, and administrative centers on distant lands, often accompanied by family groups and guided by religious, economic, or political motives. They frequently formed the core of settler societies and acted as intermediaries between the governing power and local populations. The process commonly involved land acquisition, negotiation or conflict with Indigenous peoples, and the introduction of new crops, technologies, languages, and legal frameworks.

Governance for colonies often depended on charters, company rule, or colonial administrations, with property rights and citizenship status varying by era and region. Settler patterns differed by region—from settler colonies in the Americas and Australia to enclaves in Africa and Asia.

Legacy and critique: the presence of kolonister contributed to enduring linguistic, cultural, and legal footprints, but also to displacement, violence, and a lasting legacy of inequities and borders shaped by colonialism.
