A kolmoistähtijärjestelmä, or triple star system, is an astronomical system consisting of three stars gravitationally bound to each other. These systems are a subset of multiple star systems, which can contain two or more stars. The dynamics of triple star systems are complex and depend on the orbital arrangements of the stars.

In most stable triple star systems, the configuration is hierarchical. This typically involves two stars orbiting each other closely, forming a binary system, while a third, more distant star orbits this binary pair. This arrangement prevents the system from becoming unstable and ejecting one of the stars. In such a hierarchy, the two inner stars are in a much faster orbit than the outer star's orbit around them.

The alternative configuration, where all three stars are in similarly close orbits, is generally unstable and short-lived. Over time, gravitational interactions would likely lead to one star being ejected from the system, leaving behind a binary system, or two stars merging.
