Kolmiosajärjestelmät, often translated as ternary systems, are number systems that use three as their base. Instead of the ten digits used in the decimal system (0-9) or the two digits in the binary system (0-1), a ternary system uses three digits: 0, 1, and 2. Each position in a ternary number represents a power of three, similar to how each position in a decimal number represents a power of ten.

For example, the ternary number 102 would be interpreted as (1 * 3^2) + (0 * 3^1) + (2 * 3^0) in decimal, which equals 9 + 0 + 2 = 11. The rightmost digit represents the units (3^0), the next digit to the left represents threes (3^1), the next represents nines (3^2), and so on.

Ternary systems can be balanced or unbalanced. In a balanced ternary system, the digits used are typically -1, 0, and 1, often represented by symbols like -, 0, and +. This system has unique properties, such as each number having a unique representation and simplifying certain arithmetic operations, especially division. Unbalanced ternary systems, using 0, 1, and 2, are more analogous to standard positional number systems. While less common than binary or decimal in everyday computing, ternary logic and number systems have been explored for specific computational applications and theoretical studies.
