Kolaterala refers to collateral—the assets pledged to secure the performance of an obligation, such as a loan or a contract. In practice, kolaterala gives the creditor a security interest in the pledged assets, providing a remedy if the debtor defaults. The exact meaning, rules, and procedures of kolaterala vary by jurisdiction and by the terms of the contract.

Forms of kolaterala can be tangible or intangible. Real estate, vehicles, and other physical property are common examples. Financial collateral includes cash, bank deposits, and securities. Personal property such as equipment, inventory, or receivables can also serve as kolaterala. In some cases, guarantees from third parties or letters of credit act as forms of collateral, and floating charges allow collateral to evolve as a business's assets change.

Creation and perfection are central to kolaterala. A security agreement is typically required, and the creditor must obtain some form of legal perfection—filing, taking possession or control, or other jurisdictional procedures—to establish priority over other creditors. In the event of default, the creditor may enforce the collateral by seizure, sale, or other recoveries as provided by law and contract.

Valuation and enforcement pose practical challenges. Collateral value can fluctuate, liquidity may be limited, and enforcement costs can be high. Substitution, release, or partial release provisions may be negotiated to reflect changing circumstances.
