Kolajfinomítás, often translated as "oil refining," is the process of transforming crude oil into a wide range of useful products such as gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, lubricants, and asphalt. This complex industrial process involves several stages, each designed to separate and purify the various hydrocarbon components present in crude oil. The primary goal of refining is to break down the large, complex hydrocarbon molecules in crude oil into smaller, more valuable ones, and to remove impurities like sulfur, nitrogen, and metals.

The initial step in refining is usually distillation, also known as fractionation. Crude oil is heated and introduced into a distillation column, where it separates into different fractions based on their boiling points.
