The kokosnootpalm, scientifically known as Cocos nucifera, is a tropical palm tree species belonging to the monotypic genus Cocos and the family Arecaceae. It is the only living species of the genus Cocos. The kokosnootpalm is native to the Indo-Pacific region, and its exact origin is debated, with theories suggesting it originated in Melanesia or Southeast Asia. It is now cultivated widely in tropical coastal regions around the world.

The kokosnootpalm is characterized by its tall, slender trunk, which can reach heights of up to 30 meters. The trunk is typically smooth and marked with rings from the scars of fallen leaves. At the top of the trunk, a crown of large, pinnately compound leaves, or fronds, emerges. These fronds can grow up to 6 meters long. The tree produces fruits known as coconuts, which are botanically classified as drupes. Coconuts are large and vary in size and shape depending on the variety, but typically have a hard, fibrous husk enclosing a hard shell, which in turn contains edible white flesh and coconut water.

The kokosnootpalm is of immense economic and cultural importance. The coconut fruit is a versatile food source, used for its water, flesh, and milk. The tree's trunk can be used for timber, its leaves for thatching and weaving, and its fibers for coir, used in ropes, mats, and erosion control.
