Kokkupõrkepiirkondade, also known as collision zones, are geological areas where tectonic plates converge. This convergence can happen in several ways: an oceanic plate colliding with a continental plate, two oceanic plates colliding, or two continental plates colliding. The outcome of these collisions depends on the density of the plates involved.

When an oceanic plate, which is denser, collides with a continental plate, the oceanic plate is forced beneath the continental plate in a process called subduction. This leads to the formation of volcanic mountain ranges and deep oceanic trenches along the continental margin. The Pacific Ring of Fire is a prominent example of this type of collision zone.

In a collision between two oceanic plates, the older, colder, and therefore denser plate subducts beneath the younger, warmer plate. This process results in the formation of volcanic island arcs, such as Japan or the Aleutian Islands.

When two continental plates, which are both relatively light and buoyant, collide, neither plate can easily subduct. Instead, the crust buckles, folds, and faults, leading to the uplift of massive mountain ranges. The Himalayas, formed by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates, are a classic example of this type of collision zone. These zones are characterized by intense seismic activity, including frequent earthquakes.
