Kohtutäitur is the Estonian term for a bailiff. Kohtutäiturid are legal professionals authorized to execute court judgments and other enforcement documents. To become a kohtutäitur, an individual must have a law degree, pass a qualification exam, and complete a period of apprenticeship. Kohtutäiturid have a range of powers to carry out their duties. These can include garnishing wages, seizing bank accounts, and auctioning movable and immovable property. They are also responsible for serving legal documents and conducting investigations to locate assets. The process typically begins when a creditor obtains an enforcement document from a court and submits it to a kohtutäitur for execution. The kohtutäitur then initiates the enforcement proceedings, informing the debtor and taking necessary steps to satisfy the claim.
