The term combines *kohtu* (meaning "house" or "home") and *nikkust* (a verb related to blessing or consecrating). This practice is rooted in Finnish rural culture and reflects a blend of pre-Christian and Christian traditions, emphasizing protection, prosperity, and the harmonious integration of the household into its surroundings.

The ritual typically involves a group of neighbors or family members gathering at the new dwelling. A designated individual, often an elder or someone with spiritual or communal respect, performs a series of symbolic actions. These may include sprinkling water (a purifying gesture), scattering grains or salt (symbolizing fertility and protection), and reciting prayers or folk sayings.
