When a wave has a long coherence period, it is considered highly coherent, meaning its oscillations are very regular and predictable over that span.

The coherence period is a crucial concept in wave phenomena, particularly in optics. For example, in interferometry, where waves are made to interfere with each other, the coherence period of the light source dictates the extent to which interference fringes can be observed. If the light source has a short coherence period, interference will only be visible over very small path differences between the interfering waves. Lasers, known for their high degree of coherence, have very long coherence periods, enabling complex interferometric experiments and applications.

The coherence period is inversely related to the spectral linewidth of the source. A perfectly monochromatic source, with an infinitely narrow linewidth, would theoretically have an infinite coherence period. In reality, all sources have some spectral width, leading to a finite coherence period.
