kohdaten

Kohdaten is an open data framework designed to standardize the collection, storage, and sharing of coal and carbon-related datasets. It combines a formal data model with a repository and tooling to enable interoperability among operators, researchers, and regulators.

The Kohdaten data model identifies core entities such as Deposit, Seam, Mine, Facility, Operation, EmissionEvent, EmissionFactor, CommodityTrade, and PolicyInstrument. Each entity carries core attributes like location, time, units, quality metrics, and provenance. The model supports hierarchical relationships (mines contain deposits; operations reference deposits) and can link to external standards and datasets.

Data may be serialized in JSON-LD, CSV, or RDF, and a Kohdaten API provides read and write access. A Kohdaten Validator checks conformance to the schema, validates data quality and completeness, and emits provenance metadata. Documentation includes versioned schemas, validation rules, and example datasets.

Governance is shared by the Kohdaten Alliance, a coalition of universities, industry groups, and government agencies. The framework is published under open licenses that encourage reuse with attribution and provide guidance on data licensing, privacy, and security. Versioning supports backward compatibility and migration paths.

Applications include emissions accounting (scope 1–3), resource planning, market analysis, and research. Kohdaten aims to simplify cross-dataset analysis, improve traceability of data provenance, and facilitate alignment with related standards in energy reporting and environmental management.
