Kogukulutuste is the Estonian term for total costs, referring to the aggregate of all costs incurred by an organization in producing goods or delivering services over a defined period or for a specific project. It is a core concept in cost accounting and managerial finance, used to assess profitability, plan budgets, and support pricing decisions.

Kogukulutuste consist of direct costs, which can be traced to a product or service (such as raw materials and direct labor), and indirect costs (overheads) that support operations but are not easily attributable to a single unit. They are typically broken down further into fixed costs, which do not vary with output in the short term (for example lease payments and salaries), and variable costs, which vary with activity level (such as materials and energy).

Calculation of kogukulutuste for a period is the sum of all cost items: kogukulutuste = fixed costs + variable costs. In practice, organizations may also consider the reporting of costs in relation to products or services, including the treatment of fixed overhead in cost of goods sold through different costing systems.

In costing methods, kogukulutuste are treated differently depending on the approach. Absorption costing allocates fixed overhead to products, while variable (or marginal) costing assigns only variable costs to product cost. Activity-based costing distributes overhead according to cost drivers that reflect actual usage of resources.

Applications of kogukulutuste include budgeting, pricing, profitability analysis, and break-even assessment. Limitations arise from the need to estimate and allocate indirect costs, as the choice of allocation bases and time horizon can influence the resulting cost figures.
