Koelbox, or koelbox in Dutch, is a portable insulated container designed to keep food and beverages cold during transport and outdoor activities. They are common for camping, picnics, road trips, and grocery shopping when refrigeration is unavailable. Cooling relies on thick insulation and, if used, ice blocks or gel packs to slow heat gain.

Construction and features: Koelboxen usually have a rigid outer shell, thick insulation (polyurethane or polystyrene), and an insulated lid. Many models include a seal, carrying handles, and sometimes wheels, as well as a drain plug for melted ice. Some variants have built-in temperature displays or locking latches.

Types and cooling methods: Most are passive and rely on ice or packs. Electric variants use 12/24-volt adapters or mains power and include thermoelectric units and compressor-based refrigerators. Thermoelectric cool boxes are quiet and energy-efficient but typically cool only to near ambient temperatures; compressor models provide stronger cooling but require more power and are heavier.

Usage and maintenance: Sizes range from about 15 to over 100 liters. For best performance, pre-chill contents and packs, minimize opening, and keep the box out of direct sun. Clean regularly with mild soap, rinse, and dry thoroughly. Drain melted ice promptly to avoid water buildup and odors.
