kodeord

Kodeord is a term used in Danish and Norwegian to denote a password or secret word used to authenticate a person or device. It covers words, phrases, or longer passphrases used for access control in digital systems as well as for physical security.

Etymology: from kode (code) + ord (word). In Danish, kodeord is the standard term for a login password. In Norwegian, both kodeord and passord are used, with passord being common in computing contexts; Swedish uses lösenord for the same concept.

Beyond computing, a kodeord can refer to a code word—a word or phrase shared in advance that identifies authorized personnel or triggers a predefined action in operations or communications.

Security considerations: a strong kodeord should be long, random or pseudorandom, and not based on easily guessable information. Do not reuse kodeord across services; use a password manager to store them; enable two-factor authentication where possible; change credentials after a breach.
