The name distinguishes these instruments from larger taiko drums such as odaiko, providing a high-pitched, rhythmic contrast within a group performance.

In practice, kodaiko drums are smaller in size and produce brighter, more agile tones than their larger counterparts. They are commonly employed to add rhythmic detail, accents, and quick bursts within compositions. Playing techniques vary by drum size and context, but they are typically struck with sticks called bachi and can be used to deliver precise, rapid rhythms as part of an ensemble.
