Koagulanten, also known as coagulation factors, are a group of proteins found in blood plasma that play a crucial role in hemostasis, the process of stopping bleeding. When a blood vessel is injured, these factors are activated in a complex cascade. This cascade leads to the formation of a fibrin clot, which seals the damaged vessel and prevents further blood loss.

There are numerous coagulation factors, each designated by a Roman numeral from I to XIII. For example, Factor I is fibrinogen, which is converted into fibrin during the clotting process. Factor II is prothrombin, which is activated to thrombin, an enzyme essential for fibrin formation. Other factors, such as Factor VIII and Factor IX, are crucial for the intrinsic pathway of coagulation, while factors like Factor VII are part of the extrinsic pathway. Deficiencies in any of these factors can lead to bleeding disorders. Hemophilia, for instance, is a genetic disorder caused by a deficiency in Factor VIII or Factor IX, resulting in excessive bleeding. The proper functioning of these factors is vital for maintaining vascular integrity and preventing potentially life-threatening hemorrhages.
