Klusterstruktur refers to how a set of elements is organized into groups, or clusters, that are more similar to each other than to elements in other clusters. The concept is used in many fields to reveal structure in complex data or systems by grouping related items together.

In data analysis, cluster structure is inferred through cluster analysis, which seeks to maximize within-cluster similarity and separation between clusters. Common approaches include partitioning methods such as k-means, which require the number of clusters, and hierarchical methods that produce nested, tree-like groupings without fixing the total number of clusters. Density-based and model-based approaches provide alternative ways to detect clusters of arbitrary shapes or distributions.

Cluster structure can be flat, with a single level of groups, or hierarchical, with multiple levels of subclusters. Clusters can be exclusive, where each item belongs to one cluster, or overlapping, where items may belong to several clusters. Evaluation of cluster structure uses validity measures such as silhouette width, Davies-Bouldin index, or gap statistics, and is often guided by domain knowledge.

Applications span diverse areas, including market segmentation, image and document clustering, bioinformatics (gene or protein clustering), social network analysis, and urban or facility planning where clusters reflect service areas or ecosystems.

Challenges in determining an appropriate cluster structure include selecting a similarity or distance metric, choosing the number of clusters, handling high-dimensional data, and ensuring interpretability of results.
