klostergång

Klostergång, or cloister walk, is a covered gallery that surrounds the cloister courtyard of a monastery or convent. It forms part of the monastic complex and typically connects the church, refectory, dormitory and chapter house. The walkway provides a sheltered, contemplative space for monks and nuns and allows movement between buildings without leaving the precinct.

Architecturally, the klostergång is usually an arcade or corridor with a roof and a sequence of arches supported by columns or piers. In medieval monasteries, arches may be rounded or pointed and the vaults can be barrel, groin, or ribbed. The walkway often opens to a garden or cloister, offering light, air and a visual frame for meditation.

Functionally it served daily monastic life: processions, study, reading, and exercise; a way to move between buildings in all weather and seasons, and a place for quiet reflection along the edge of the spiritual heart of the monastery.

Many klostergångs survive as architectural and cultural heritage in Europe. They range from simple, utilitarian passages to elaborately decorated galleries in major abbeys. Today they are often preserved as protected monuments and are accessible to visitors, helping illustrate medieval monastic life and architectural tradition.
