kjördæmum
Kjördæmum is an Icelandic term referring to electoral districts. These districts are used to divide Iceland for the purpose of electing members to the Althing, the national parliament. The number and boundaries of these districts have evolved over time, reflecting demographic changes and political considerations. Currently, Iceland is divided into six constituencies, with Reykjavík divided into three of them. The distribution of seats among the constituencies is adjusted after each census to ensure representation reflects population shifts. Each constituency elects a certain number of representatives, with some seats allocated through a leveling system to ensure proportionality across the country. The specific rules for the formation and operation of kjördæmum are laid out in Icelandic electoral law. This system aims to balance direct representation with national proportionality.
