Kjernemodeller, or nuclear models, are theoretical frameworks used to describe the structure and behavior of atomic nuclei. These models aim to explain the observed properties of nuclei, such as their binding energies, nuclear radii, and the energy levels within them.

One of the earliest and simplest models is the liquid drop model. It treats the nucleus as a charged liquid drop, with the cohesive force being the strong nuclear force and the repulsive force being the electrostatic repulsion between protons. This model is effective at explaining the binding energy of large nuclei and the phenomenon of nuclear fission.

The shell model, on the other hand, views nucleons (protons and neutrons) as occupying discrete energy levels, similar to electrons in atomic orbitals. This model successfully explains the existence of "magic numbers," which correspond to particularly stable nuclei with filled nucleon shells.

Another important model is the collective model, which combines aspects of the liquid drop and shell models. It describes nuclei that exhibit collective excitations, such as rotations and vibrations, in addition to the behavior of individual nucleons. This model is particularly useful for understanding the properties of deformed nuclei.

More sophisticated models, such as the Hartree-Fock method and various quantum Monte Carlo approaches, employ advanced computational techniques to solve the complex many-body problem of the nucleus. These models aim for a more fundamental understanding of nuclear forces and structure. While no single model perfectly describes all aspects of nuclear physics, each provides valuable insights into the intricate world of the atomic nucleus.
